Improve your website’s visibility, discoverability and accessibility

On every webpage, 10 simple and DIY-able fixes can make a big difference to whether AI and search engines — and, more importantly, the humans using them — can find, understand and trust your website.

That’s crucial because if people can’t find your work, they can’t buy or benefit from it.

And yet, precious few business owners do these 10 things. Even high-end web designers often miss them. 🙄

Happily, these 10 fixes don’t require much technical skill. You’ll likely be able to complete them yourself in an hour or so per webpage, without having to pay someone to help.

It doesn’t require any unethical marketing trickery, either.

It’s simply about structuring each webpage logically and explaining what you offer clearly, in 10 very specific ways.

A testimonial about the checklist, which reads: "If you want clients to stay on your page and book your services, you need to read this guide." — Sarah Colborne, French for Littles, Gadigal & Wangal land, Sydney

Website design that benefits robots and humans

Lots has changed in this AI-suddenly-everywhere era.

But funnily enough, robots and humans have something in common: we both understand things better when they’re logically structured in clearly organised, well-labelled ways.

So, get these 10 things right on your key webpages…

And your site and services are more likely to be recommended in AI and search engine answers to your ideal client’s soul-searching 2 am questions.

The 10 fixes also make websites more understandable for people, too.

They even make your site more accessible for folks often excluded in the online world, including those with disabilities who rely on screen readers and other assistive tech.

And thus, sorting your 10 things is a way to embody the permaculture ethic of People Care and make the online world a little kinder, fairer and more accessible for all. 🙌

This checklist is for you if:

✅ You’re preparing to build your own DIY website.

✅ You’re updating an existing website — one you built yourself, or one someone built for you.

✅ You’re working with a web designer and want to ensure they follow best practices.

✅ You’d like more people to find your site, without resorting to pushy marketing tactics.

✅ You want to help your website show up in AI and search engine results, but don’t have the budget to pay for help right now.

But it’s not a good fit if:

❌ You want someone else to build or fix your website for you — this is a DIY resource (although you could hand it over to your marketing assistant or VA as a to-do list, I guess).

❌ You’re chasing quick growth hacks; this is a longer-term, sustainable marketing strategy, and it can take a few months to see results.

❌ You don’t yet have a website or business up and running (come back once you’re ready to build your first webpages).

❌ You want deep-dive keyword research and strategy — that’s covered in my DIY SEO for Small Business guide instead.

A simple, one-place checklist where I can make sure I’m doing all the right things with web design for search engines. So helpful!

I need to refresh my website badly, and reading through this checklist I was able to easily identify where I can make improvements. I have zero prior knowledge of building a website and what to include so I found this informative.

I loved the examples in each section. This made it much easier to envision what the checklist outcomes were. Explaining the “why” for each topic was also great.

One page per topic is awesome as it feels more accessible and less overwhelming.

If you aren’t sure what to include on your website and why this is an awesome starting point and makes the whole process of website creation feel less overwhelming. Love it!
