Accessible pricing

My goal is to help for-good business founders succeed and be part of positive change in the world — because I truly believe that small businesses can be part of the revolution to a fairer, kinder, greener future.

Where possible, I don’t want money to be a barrier to accessing crucial marketing knowledge that may help your brilliant small business grow and thrive.

So, I’m trialling two types of accessible pricing for downloadable products in my online shop:

  • ‘Pay what you can’ — literally, you choose what you can afford to give. I provide a suggested amount, say $15, but if what you need is free, it’s free.
  • Sliding scale pricing — I set three price levels: Recommended, Supported and Pay It Forward. You self-select based on what you can afford, with the top level helping subsidise Supported folks.

See below for more detail on how each of these works.

These pricing models are offered as an embodiment of permaculture’s People Care and Fair Share ethics, a way to make my work more accessible to all folks, including those who might not have the financial resources to pay full price.

It’s also an attempt to model how even small businesses can play a part in addressing systemic inequalities — by reducing financial barriers and/or allowing those of us who have more to help and support those of us who have less.

My shop’s accessible pricing policy is offered in addition to the many free resources I share via my blog, newsletter, Instagram and YouTube, and a small annual pro bono budget for 1:1 work with non-profits.

Guide to sliding scale pricing

Sliding scale pricing is a flexible model that offers products or services at multiple price points based on a person’s income or ability to pay. It’s designed as a tool to improve accessibility and address income and other inequalities.

I offer three sliding scale pricing levels, which you self-select when purchasing:

  • Recommended — this is the actual cost of the product. It represents an equitable exchange for the valuable information and skills I’m sharing. This price means I am fairly compensated for the many hours (and 20+ years of lived experience) that go into creating each product.

  • Supported — this gives you a 30% discount. It’s designed for folks who may struggle to meet basic needs or who have little-to-no expendable income, meaning paying for this product would be a significant hardship. (Note: financial hardship means you might struggle to pay rent or put dinner on the table. That’s different from sacrifice, where you might temporarily choose to forgo buying coffee, a new outfit or concert tickets to instead prioritise learning a new skill.)

  • Pay It Forward — this means you’re paying 30% above the actual cost. It’s for people who are financially secure and stable, and can comfortably afford to help subsidise folks who need the Supported level. You get access to helpful marketing information while also offering a leg up for other ethical small business owners who can’t yet stretch to full price. It’s an easy way to generously share your wealth and privilege, and so very appreciated.

My sliding scale model relies on your honesty and respect for complexity. I don’t ask for any kind of income verification — I trust you to self-select the level that best matches your personal circumstances.

When you use this system honestly and fairly, you’re directly contributing to a business culture of trust, accountability, deep work, kindness and equality. The sort of world we’d all prefer to live in, right?

Additionally, when you help me get paid fairly for my work, I have more time and financial capacity to create free and low-cost resources for all.

Deep gratitude to Alexis J Cunningfolk and her excellent sliding scale pricing guide and ‘green bottle’ model, which has informed much of my own thinking and strategy.

Guide to ‘pay what you can’ pricing

‘Pay what you can’ is a pricing model where buyers choose the amount they want to pay for a product or service. It’s aimed at increasing accessibility and inclusion by helping people with lower incomes get essential information or help.

I have made some products ‘pay what you can’ because they contain information that I believe every ethical small business owner needs and will benefit from. I don’t want money to be a barrier to accessing this crucial knowledge.

That means these resources are free, if that’s what you need.

But I encourage you to throw some dollars into the kitty when purchasing, if you can. I can only keep offering accessible resources like this because most folks choose to give a little.

For each product, I offer a suggested price, which represents an equitable exchange for the valuable information and skills I’m sharing. You can choose to pay more or less depending on your situation.

Again, this system relies on your honesty and fair exchange. I don’t police the amounts anyone chooses to pay, but rather trust that you will select an amount that honours both my work and your own financial circumstances.

Deep gratitude to Heather Jo Flores and her Free Permaculture model for inspiring my ‘pay what you can’ thinking and strategy.
